What is car wear, and why is it “not cash”?
The short answer
Car wear is the value your car loses to the business, called depreciation. Nobody sends you a bill for it, so it isn’t money leaving your pocket. It still matters: it’s a cost you can claim.
WorthMile works it out at IRD’s rate from what you paid for the car and when. Enter those in Depreciation (under More) if the Finish setting up card asks.
It counts from when you started driving for work, not from when you bought the car. If you owned the car before then, the app asks what it was worth when you started.
Paying the car off with a loan? Enter its full price all the same: see Car loan.
