Privacy Policy

Effective 4 September 2026

In short

This summary is here so you can understand the shape of it in a minute. It is not a substitute for the rest of the page, and where the two differ the detailed sections apply.

  • We collect what the app needs to work out your income, costs, business-use percentage and tax position — and nothing to sell or advertise with.
  • Location is recorded only between Start Shift and End Shift. Never before, never after, never in the background when no shift is running.
  • We do not sell your personal information, and we never have. There is no advertising in WorthMile and no advertising identifier.
  • Raw GPS points are deleted automatically after 12 months. The distances already worked out from them survive, because you need those for IRD.
  • You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app, permanently, in one action.
  • Questions or requests: privacy@worthmile.com.

1. Who we are

WorthMile is a product of Novaravia Limited (NZBN 9429053877659, company number 9450756), a company registered in New Zealand. In this policy “we”, “us” and “our” mean Novaravia Limited, and “you” means the person using WorthMile.

Novaravia Limited is an agency for the purposes of the Privacy Act 2020 (NZ), and this policy describes how we handle personal information under that Act and its Information Privacy Principles.

Our registered office is recorded on the New Zealand Companies Register against Novaravia Limited, NZBN 9429053877659. For anything about your personal information, write to privacy@worthmile.com — that address goes to the person responsible for privacy at Novaravia Limited and is the fastest route to a real answer.

2. What this policy covers

This policy covers the WorthMile mobile app, the WorthMile website at worthmile.com, and any support correspondence you have with us about them.

It does not cover the rideshare platforms you drive for. Uber, Bolt, DiDi and any other platform you work each hold their own data about you under their own policies, and WorthMile has no access to your accounts with them. When you import a monthly statement, you are giving us a copy of a document they gave you — we do not connect to them on your behalf.

WorthMile is built for New Zealand drivers and is offered in New Zealand. If you use it from elsewhere, you do so on your own initiative and New Zealand law applies.

3. The information we collect

Almost everything below is information you type in or upload. The exceptions are location (only during a shift), your push token (only if you turn notifications on), and the small amount of technical information any app or website receives when it is used.

4. Location data — read this one

Location is the most sensitive thing WorthMile touches, so it gets its own section rather than a line in a list.

When we record it

Only while a shift is running — that is, after you press Start Shift and before you press End Shift. WorthMile does not record your location when no shift is active, and it has no geofencing, no trip auto-detection and no always-on tracking.

Why we need background location

Android asks for background location permission because the recording must keep running with the screen off and the app not in front of you — a driver does not hold their phone open for a five-hour shift, and a track with the middle missing is worthless as an IRD record. That permission is used for this and nothing else.

What we do with it

Points are joined into a distance for that shift. That distance feeds your business-use percentage, your vehicle deduction, your cost per kilometre, and the IRD logbook evidence pack — and it lets the app cross-check what you typed from your dash against what was actually driven. You can view the route for any shift you recorded.

What we never do with it

We do not sell it, share it with advertisers or data brokers, use it to build a profile of your movements outside work, or disclose it to any rideshare platform, insurer or employer. No third party receives your location from us except the infrastructure providers in section 6, which store it on our behalf and may not use it themselves.

You can turn it off

Location is optional. Decline the permission, or withdraw it later in your device settings, and WorthMile keeps working — you enter your odometer readings by hand instead, which is the method IRD has always accepted. You lose the automatic distance and the route map, not the app.

5. What we do not collect

Stating this plainly is worth more than leaving it to be inferred from the list above:

  • Your card number. Payments go directly to Stripe. Card details are entered on Stripe’s own checkout page and never reach our servers or our database.
  • Your IRD number, bank account or myIR login. WorthMile prepares figures; it does not file anything and has no connection to IRD.
  • Your rideshare platform passwords. We never ask for them and could not use them.
  • Your contacts, photos library, microphone, or call and message logs.
  • Advertising identifiers. WorthMile contains no advertising and no advertising SDK.
  • Third-party analytics or behavioural tracking. We do not run Google Analytics or an equivalent in the app.
  • The notifications on your phone. An earlier experiment would have read rideshare app notifications to detect trips. It is not in the released app: the Android declarations that would allow it were removed before release, and no such data exists.

6. Why we collect it, and what we do with it

PurposeWhat it uses
Give you an account and keep it secureAccount, technical
Calculate income, costs, business-use %, GST, depreciation and provisional taxShifts, earnings, expenses, fuel, vehicle, profile, location
Produce IRD-shaped records — the logbook evidence pack, tax summaries, CSV exportsShifts, location, logbook periods, expenses, vehicle
Show you a route map for a shift you recordedLocation
Tell you whether tonight is worth driving, and what is on near youShifts and earnings history, plus your approximate location at the moment you ask
Remind you about deadlines, recurring costs and unfinished entriesCompliance reminders, recurring expenses, shifts, push token
Take payment and manage your subscriptionAccount, subscription
Answer your support questionsWhatever you tell us, plus your account
Keep the service running, prevent abuse, and fix faultsTechnical, recorder event log
Meet our own legal obligations, including tax and company record-keepingSubscription and billing records

We do not use your information for automated decision-making that produces a legal effect for you, and we do not profile you for marketing.

7. Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information and we do not trade it. We use a small number of infrastructure providers to run the service. Each processes data on our instructions and is not permitted to use it for its own purposes.

ProviderWhat it does for usWhat it can seeWhere
SupabaseDatabase, authentication, file storage for receiptsEverything you store in WorthMileServers outside NZ
VercelHosts the app and websiteTechnical request data (IP, device, timestamps)Servers outside NZ
StripeSubscription paymentsYour email, name, and payment details you give Stripe directlyServers outside NZ
Google — Firebase Cloud MessagingDelivers push notificationsYour device push token and the notification textServers outside NZ
Google — Static MapsDraws the route map for a shift you recordedThe route itself and your device’s IP address — see belowServers outside NZ
Ticketmaster Discovery APIFinds public events near you, to suggest when demand may be higherApproximate coordinates and a search radius. No name, account or device identifier.Servers outside NZ
EventfindaThe same, from a second listings sourceApproximate coordinates and a search radius. No name, account or device identifier.Servers outside NZ

The route map sends more than the others — so it gets its own paragraph

When you open the route map for a shift, your device requests a map image from Google with the shift’s route drawn on it. The route is encoded in that request, and because your device makes the request directly, Google receives both the route and your device’s IP address, and Google’s own terms and cookies apply to it. This is the single largest disclosure WorthMile makes.

It happens only when you open a map. If you never open one, no route ever leaves our systems.

The events lookup sends your approximate location, and nothing else

To answer “what is on near me tonight”, our server asks Ticketmaster and Eventfinda what is happening within a radius of a point. Those coordinates are yours.

The request is made by our server, not your device, which matters: those providers see a location and a radius, but not your IP address, not your account, and nothing that identifies you or links two searches together. The feature is optional — if you decline the location permission, WorthMile does not make the request at all.

Two sources that receive nothing about you

Average pump prices come from a public MBIE dataset, downloaded by our server on a schedule with no reference to any user. Vehicle fuel-efficiency figures come from a copy of the public NZTA vehicle register held in our own database — looking up your car queries our database, not theirs, so no request about your vehicle ever leaves our systems.

We may also disclose personal information where:

  • you ask us to, or you have authorised it;
  • it is required by New Zealand law, a court order, or a lawful request from a regulator or enforcement agency;
  • it is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious threat to someone’s life, health or safety;
  • we sell or transfer the business, in which case the acquirer must continue to be bound by a policy no less protective than this one, and we will tell you before it takes effect.

8. Sending information overseas

Every provider in section 7 stores data on servers outside New Zealand. That is a disclosure of personal information to a foreign person under Information Privacy Principle 12, and we rely on those providers being subject to privacy safeguards comparable to the Privacy Act 2020 — through their own binding data-processing terms, which require them to protect the information, use it only on our instructions, and delete it when we ask.

You should understand that once information is stored overseas it may also be accessible to the authorities of that country under their own laws, and New Zealand’s Privacy Act cannot prevent that. If that is not acceptable to you, WorthMile is not the right tool for you — we would rather say so here than bury it.

9. How long we keep it

WhatHow longWhy
Raw GPS pointsDeleted automatically 12 months after they are recordedThe point-by-point trail stops being useful once the distance is computed, and it is the most sensitive thing we hold
Distances and business-use percentages derived from those pointsWhile your account is openIRD expects vehicle records to be kept for seven years; deleting these would destroy your own evidence
Shifts, earnings, expenses, receipts, fuel, vehicle, logbook periodsWhile your account is openMulti-year tax records, and prior-year figures are part of the product
Account and profileWhile your account is openTo provide the service
Subscription and payment recordsSeven years after the transaction, even if you close your accountCompanies Act and Tax Administration Act record-keeping. Held by us and by Stripe.
Push tokenUntil you disable notifications, uninstall, or the token stops workingInvalid tokens are removed automatically when delivery fails
Notification send logWhile your account is openSo the app does not send you the same reminder twice
Support correspondenceTwo years after the matter is closedTo keep context if you write again

10. Deleting your account

You can delete your account from within the app, under Settings. It is immediate and permanent: your profile, shifts, earnings, expenses, receipts, fuel records, vehicle, logbook periods, GPS history and device tokens are erased, and your login is destroyed.

Two things survive, and you should know which: payment records, because we are legally required to keep them for seven years and because Stripe holds its own copy; and anything already contained in routine backups, which are overwritten on a rolling cycle rather than edited. Backups are not used to restore deleted accounts.

Export anything you want to keep first. There is no undo, and we cannot recover a deleted account for you. Tax figures, the logbook evidence pack and CSV exports are all available from inside the app before you delete.

11. Keeping it safe

Access to your data is enforced at the database itself by row-level security, so a request carrying your login can only ever read and write your own rows. That is a stronger guarantee than filtering in the app, because it holds even if the app has a bug.

  • Traffic between your device and our servers is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS).
  • Data is encrypted at rest by our database and storage providers.
  • Passwords are stored only as a cryptographic hash. Nobody at Novaravia Limited can read your password, and we will never ask you for it.
  • Receipt files are held in a private bucket that is not publicly readable.
  • Administrative access is limited to the people who need it to run the service, and is protected by two-factor authentication.

No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we commit to is this: if a privacy breach occurs that has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm, we will notify the Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the affected people as soon as practicable, as the Privacy Act 2020 requires.

12. Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you, and be told what we hold and why;
  • Correct anything that is wrong — or, if we disagree that it is wrong, to have your requested correction attached to the record;
  • Complain if you think we have mishandled your information.

Most of this you can do yourself and immediately: every figure in WorthMile is editable in the app, and you can export your data at any time. If you would rather ask us, write to privacy@worthmile.com. We will confirm we have your request promptly and respond within 20 working days, which is the statutory limit. There is no charge.

We may need to confirm who you are before releasing information — that protection exists for you, not for us.

13. Cookies and on-device storage

WorthMile does not use advertising or tracking cookies, and there is no third-party analytics tag on the site or in the app.

What we do store on your device:

  • A session cookie and token so you stay signed in. Without it you would re-enter your password constantly.
  • Local storage for your theme choice, the view you last had open, and an offline queue of entries made without a connection so they can be saved when you are back on line.

Clearing your browser or app storage removes these. It will sign you out, and any entry still waiting in the offline queue will be lost.

14. Children

WorthMile is a tool for people running a driving business and is not directed at children. You must be at least 18 to hold an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18; if we learn that we have, we will delete it. If you believe a child has given us information, tell us at privacy@worthmile.com.

15. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when the way we handle information changes, and change the effective date at the top. If a change materially affects your rights or significantly widens what we collect or who we share it with, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, rather than relying on you to notice.

Previous versions are not published on this site. If you want the text that applied on a particular date, ask us and we will send it.

16. Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, tell us first at privacy@worthmile.com — we would rather fix it than have you take it elsewhere, and we will respond within 20 working days.

If we cannot resolve it, you have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, which is free and independent: privacy.org.nz, 0800 803 909.
