Know what every mile is worth

Version 0.1.0

WorthMile is a copilot for New Zealand rideshare drivers. It rides along for the shift, works out what the driving actually earned once the car has been paid for, and tells you what that means for tonight and for your tax return.

The premise is simple: a fare is not earnings. Fuel, tyres, servicing, depreciation, ACC and the tax you have not paid yet all come out of it, and most of them arrive weeks or months after the trip that caused them. WorthMile carries those costs back to the shift that incurred them, so the number you look at is money you can keep.

Track the shift

Start a shift and WorthMile records the distance itself, with the screen off and the app closed. Pause it for a personal detour so those kilometres never reach your logbook. Log fuel, expenses and receipts as you go — and if you lose signal, entries queue up and save themselves when you are back.

See what it actually paid

Not the fare — what you kept. Your real hourly rate after fuel, running costs and the tax you have not paid yet. Which days and hours earn most, how far you drove empty, what a kilometre costs you, and how this week compares with the ones behind it.

Decide whether to go out

A read on tonight before you leave: whether it is worth driving, what is on nearby that moves people, how you are tracking against your own target, and when to call it. Built from your own history rather than a generic heatmap.

Be ready at tax time

Income tax, ACC, provisional tax and GST worked out as you go, at IRD’s published rates. Vehicle deductions both ways so you can see which method suits you, depreciation handled properly, and an IRD-shaped logbook pack you can hand to your accountant.

What makes it accurate

Most of WorthMile is the unglamorous work of getting a number right when the easy version would be wrong.

It learns your car, not a spec sheet

Fuel consumption is measured from your own fill-ups rather than taken from a manufacturer figure, so it reflects your car, your routes and your right foot. It also knows when a splash of $25 is not a full tank, and refuses to call that a measurement.

It knows the 90-day logbook rule

Run a 90-day logbook and WorthMile establishes your business-use percentage and holds it for three years, the way IRD expects — instead of quietly drifting every time you drive to the shops. It keeps measuring in the background so you can see when the frozen figure is going stale.

Lumpy costs land in the week that caused them

Tyres, servicing, registration and insurance arrive in one hit but are earned against over months. WorthMile sets money aside each week at the rate that applied in that week, so changing a bill today does not silently rewrite what last year cost you.

Depreciation done the way IRD does it

A car you already owned enters the business at its market value on the day it started working, not at what you paid years ago — and the diminishing-value rate is applied per tax year, so a rate change affects future years rather than restating returns you have filed.

It separates paid driving from positioning

The kilometres with a passenger in the car and the kilometres spent getting to them are not the same thing. WorthMile tells them apart where your data supports it, and shows how much of your shift was time stopped rather than moving.

It reconciles, and it never invents

Import a monthly statement and WorthMile compares it against the shifts you logged. Where they disagree it shows you the gap and names it — it will not quietly zero a number or fabricate a shift to make a total balance.

It survives a dead zone

Entries made without signal queue on the device and save themselves when you are back. If the app is closed mid-shift, the recorder keeps going and the distance is reconciled afterwards, so a shift is not lost because a phone did something unhelpful.

About these figures

WorthMile calculates tax, GST, depreciation and provisional tax figures from the data you enter and from IRD's published rates and thresholds. Those rates were last checked against IRD on 12 August 2026, and they change.

Every figure is an estimate. It is information to help you understand your own numbers — it is not tax, accounting or legal advice, and Novaravia Limited is not a registered tax agent.

The figures are only as good as what goes in. Odometer readings, fares, expenses and dates all come from you, and WorthMile cannot tell whether they are complete or correct.

You remain responsible for your own tax return and for meeting your obligations to IRD. Check anything you intend to file with IRD or with a professional first.
